It was great to be back on the streets witnessing this morning! Over the past few weeks I have been very sick and I have not felt like heading out. It was an exciting morning of doing the Lord’s work today. I first started out near the courthouse when I stopped to talk to Ashley who was headed to work. She told me that she was a Christian and believed in Jesus and that God was the center of her life. She seemed very nice so the approach that I decided to use was one of my testimony. I told her how God had changed me by looking in the Commandments to see just how wretched I really was. It was a good conversation and after I finished witnessing to her she was very pleased to hear that a fellow Christian was telling people about the Lord. (God’s glory, not mine)
I struck out twice in a row talking to people and then all of a sudden it seemed as if the sidewalks cleared out. I couldn’t find anyone, anywhere. I prayed that God would just lead me to someone he wanted me to talk to. So I headed back up to the courthouse. This is when my story picks up…
I came across Junior sitting on the bench next to the courthouse. I offered him a tract and asked if I could sit down. Sure he said. Junior looked rough. You could really tell that life had treated him tough in a lot of ways. I asked him about his spiritual beliefs and he said the he wasn’t a Christian but if he was he would be a Jehovah Witness. What?! What a blessed opportunity this was. I began to point out the differences in the Jesus of the JW and the Jesus of the Bible. He listened, I mean he really listened. I told him that one day he would die and one day I would die. He looked me right in the eye and said I bet I will beat you there, young man. It turns out the Junior has OPCD. Basically it means his lungs are breaking down. I know all about it because my grandfather had the same thing too. So we talked about his treatments and such. I sat with him for awhile this morning and continued to talk to him about the Commandments and how knowing the right Jesus is so important. Please pray for Junior. Please.
As I was passing out tracts I noticed a guy sitting talking to another lady so I asked him if I had given him one of these. He looked at me and said “Oh, you believe in Jesus?
Yes I sure do, I said
He look puzzled..And then asked me. Could you tell me what the 1st commandment is? So I answered him. He then said, Well if you worship Jesus, don’t you break the 1st commandment?
Nope, I told him and then I gave him a quick theology lesson on the Trinity and how even the disciples and apostles worshipped Jesus. So I tried to turn the conversation around by asking him some questions. Do you believe in God?
I think there might be a higher power he said. So I asked, “And what would this higher power require of you?” He told me that if there was a higher power he would have to prove himself by coming down and slapping him in the face to make him believe. Before I knew it he was talking about how he knew the Earth was billions of years old and how evolution is a proven fact. So I tried to use some ideas from Mark Cahill about order and design to show him that where there is order there is an Orderer and where there is design there is a Designer. He kinda shrugged off what I had to say and then began telling me that it was a cruel thing if God sent people to Hell that have never heard about Jesus. I tried to explain to him that it is sin that sends people to Hell and that not believing in the Savior falls under that umbrella but God has given everyone a conscience and has wrote His law on their hearts. But wouldn’t you know it his bus rolled up. Before he left he told me this “I have talked to a lot of Christians and completely dismantled their beliefs, but it was nice talking to someone who knows their stuff”. To God be the glory for that! An atheist heard the truth today! I put a “Why Christianity” tract in his hand and I told him that we would meet again soon.
