How did Jesus meet the people that He spoke with? Jesus went out to where the people were. When John the Baptist was here, he went out to where the people were. When John Wesley, the great revivalist was here, he went out to where the people were. He held meetings in the open air sometimes 30,000 at a time. When George Whitfield came to America, during the first Great Awakening, almost all of his meetings were outdoors. When the Salvation Army revivals occurred they were almost always outdoors. As Christians we think that by building a monument to ourselves and putting a nice flashy projector and a booming sound system in it, that we’re having church. I want to tell you that is not the church of the New Testament.
God has been speaking everywhere saying there is a massive shaking coming to the church. He is saying I want a church without walls. We, as the church, should not shut ourselves off from the world but go and in front of the whole world we are Jesus to those people. That is what we are supposed to be. We are the body of Jesus on the Earth. If we can get back to that then the world will change.
America is unique, in that it has incredibly high church attendance and yet an utterly lukewarm church. What does God say to the lukewarm church? He says I will spew you out of my mouth. God says, I can stand anything but this. I would rather that you were hot or cold but because you’re lukewarm I’m going to spew you out of my mouth. You kind of have an appearance of Godliness but where is it really? That is what God is saying to the lukewarm church. You only have to go to Revelation chapter 3 to see how severe He is with them. He says that you are blind, pitiable, naked, and wretched. Put on eye salve so you can see. Put on white robes. He is saying to get your act together.
What was one of the reasons that God used John the Baptist? Because the church was in desperate need of repentance and the church today is in desperate need of repentance. And when we repent and the church finally gets rid of its sin - then God can move. And God uses the church at that point to say something to the whole world. He sends revival, He sends His Holy Spirit, because suddenly they are a clean channel. What is it going to take, church? What is it going to take for all of us to come to the foot of the cross seeking to leave our Sunday morning Christianity and start living daily, repenting daily, and carrying our cross daily? It’s a tough question that demands our attention. I hope you will consider it.
